I started this project with quick doodle. The idea was to depict the derelict demolished city inhabited with living zombies. I decided to draw a big square surrounded with houses and a part of a blasted bridge. Such a broad space allows nice location of different characters, objects and other stuff.

I drew the doodle in gray-scale mode, which further facilitated with application of photo-textures.

Next stage of work was the search for references (I'm extremely fond of cgtextures.com resource, which features plenty of good photos of excellent quality on nearly every topic). So I picked up some photos which best fitted the idea of the work.

For multilay I used 40-50% transparency. At that stage I didn't use contrast or levels, since the main thing was to grasp the composition and balance of large-scale objects.

Further I concentrated on textures and details of the work: billboards, garbage, blasted bridge... All such things appear along the way. To maintain creativity keep checking references and noticing fancy nuances.

I added some details and got rid of superfluous staff. At that stage I adjusted the tone and brightness of the image, since it was the right time to settle its lighting and overall mood

The detailed elaboration followed. I decided to add the debris of the blasted bridge, some damaged cars, cracked pavements and small features of the buildings (smashed windows, shabby signboards, mud, etc.)

When applying photos and textures you always lean to extra-drawing. This is a real fun and interesting work. Moreover, here you are free to create the effects of perspective view. This can be achieved via lights and shadows, contrast and color. However, it is better not to abuse contrast, since it may spoil the desired effect. Moderation and accuracy are your best allies here.

OK, here we are, in the most intriguing part of the process: lighting, falling shadows and colors. Since the light on my picture fell from the left side, I decided to make the dramatic bridge shadow falling on the road. It looked good and conveyed deep effect to the image. I also adjusted the tone and colors of the image by adding the contrast. Clouds and sunlit buildings at the background also contributed to airy deep effect. That was the stage I tried to gain good object visualization of my work.

Along the way I decided to switch the palette of the picture by adding some cold colors in shadows and warm colors in brighter areas. I think it looks good and delivers art expressiveness to the work. Afterwards, I placed zombies, dead bodies and pools of blood at the streets (which was OK with the style of the picture). I found a few photos of characters exactly for my work.

I grouped the objects and started editing them. One of the most important things here is to make the character look natural in the environment. To achieve that I used transparent layers. Lights, shadows and overall gamma of the character should not fall out of the picture's tone. You can follow the way I was doing that.
